Military Animals and the History Behind Them Meet Lex L479. Lex is a Belgian Malinois and is part of an extraordinary team. She lives, works, and spends every hour of the day with her handler and best friend, Sergeant Mark Vierig. Together, Vierig and Lex make a rare type of team. Their mission is to track down fleeing insurgents and find those who plant IEDs, or improvised explosive devices. During February of 2011, Lex, Vierig, and a marine squad were returning back to base when they were fired upon by three Taliban insurgents. The marines returned fire, and the insurgents fled into a nearby village. Animals were an important part of ancient warfare and their use has continued until today. Due to the invention and development of the engine, the use of horses in military and warfare has been phased out of practice. In poorer, less-developed nations, horses, as well as camels, continue to be used for transportation, and in modern times, there are certain circumstances where military forces will use mules or horses for transport. Some animals, that were extremely useful in the past, have become unnecessary, due to the advancing times and technologies.
